Soviet Music - Two Views

From International Socialist Review, Vol.19 No.4, Fall 1958, pp.138-139.
Transcription & mark-up by Einde O’Callaghan for ETOL.

In The Politics of Soviet Music, which appeared in our spring issue, M. Bernz discussed the relation between the Stalinist bureaucracy and Soviet musical production. In this issue, Trent Hutter takes exception to some of the author’s critical remarks about various Soviet composers; while Bernz responds by indicating the musical standards on which he based his judgments. Both Hutter and Bernz agree with the position of the International Socialist Review that Soviet artists should be free to express themselves in accordance with their own conscience.
