The British Economy, 1920-1957
A.J. Youngson
Allen & Unwin, 28s.

This is a bad book. The General Strike was due ‘at least in part to the influence within trade unionism of the fighting, romantic Celt’. (p.65) Since 1951 we have been living, it appears, under ‘Tory socialism’. (p.158) Monetary phenomena are imputed a slightly transcendental air. The Economist, of course, is holy writ. Nonetheless, there are few “standard”, ‘respectable’ references to British economic history of the past three decades. This is one of them. Socialists can use it as a scaffolding of fact, but should beware of hanging by its prejudices.
