NOTE FROM CHICHERIN TO THE GERMAN CONSUL IN MOSCOW ON THE GERMAN-TURKISH ADVANCE ON BAKU
4 July 1918
Izvestia, 9 October 1918
In spite of the untiring efforts of the Soviet Government to establish friendly relations with Germany, and in spite of the repeated assurances of the German Government itself, German-Turkish forces are advancing on Baku and are already in Shemakha. We protest most emphatically against this violation of the Brest treaty and against the attack on Baku, which is unshakeably loyal to the Soviet Government. We firmly trust that the German Government will order these troops to cease their advance and will put an end to this attempt to violate the integrity of our territory.
