The One Big Union Monthly
(1919-1921)
Introduction
The One Big Union Monthly, a magazine published by the General Executive Board of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), began publication in Chicago on March 1, 1919. It replaced the two main previous IWW periodicals, Solidarity, and The Industrial Worker, which had been forced to close during World War I.
The IWW had suffered serious repression during the War at the hands of the US government. More than 100 of its leaders were put on trial for sedition and offices across the country were raided and their files and literature seized. The Solicitor General of the Post Office, W.H. Lamar, barred the IWW from using the mail service, banning Solidarity, and The Industrial Worker, as well as all IWW defense bulletins and most of the organization's other correspondence.
The One Big Union Monthly continued publication until January 1921 when it was replaced by the Industrial Pioneer, (1921-1926).
