Middle School
John Partridge
Gollancz, 25s
Partridge’s outspoken condemnation of selective secondary education (which some local education authorities seem determined to retain), and of the worst excesses to which it inevitably leads – notably streaming and corporal punishment – is based on bis own teaching experience at a boys’ secondary modern school in the Midlands. His constructive suggestions are aimed at raising pupils’ motivation: for example, courses geared to their interests and to the social and vocational needs of the community. Potent support for those of us who for years have been urging the necessity of comprehensive schools and a classless system of education.
