Mailings and correspondence of the
Leninist Trotskyist Tendency/Faction of the Fourth International
(United Secretariat – 1972-1977)

From the foundation of the Leninist Trotskyist Faction in August 1973 to its dissolution in August 1977, the Coordinating Committee of the Faction in New York City issued two sets of mailings. One was sent to members of the LTF Steering Committee and the other to an LTF coordinator in each locality, who made it available to members. These mailings were often identical, differing only in the cover letter, but often they were significantly different. The mailings were not a “discussion bulletin,” but were purely for informational purposes. Those who are familiar with the more formal International Internal Discussion Bulletin of the Fourth International (United Secretariat), or the internal information and discussion bulletins issued by its various national sections during the 1970s will not find any great revelations here. The material contained in these mailings, however, does;provide additional context and information on these discussions.

Where possible both mailings, to Steering Committee members and to Coordinators, are included here. Additionally this archive includes correspondence, notes on various meetings, and documents that were circulated within the LTF but not part of the “official” mailings.

Over a 4½ month period, from February to June in 1971, Ross Dowson, Executive Secretary of the League for Socialist Action/Ligue Socialiste Ouvrière, Canadian section of the Fourth International, was resident in Brussels, Belgium, attending meetings of the United Secretariat of the FI and traveling throughout Europe. His correspondence from this period concerns the developing differences in the International, various meetings of European sections of the FI, the emergence of a "pro-European" tendency in the LSA/LSO, other internal developments in the Canadian section and many other things. (Note: These letters are apparently from an internal bulletin or mailing of the Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores [Argentina]. An English-language translation of the March 20 letter from Silvio Paolicchi was included in the April 6, 1974 mailing of the LTF. The March 11 letter to the United Secretariat from Roberto Massari apparently was never part of an official LTF mailing.)

A Letter from "Walloon" Supporters of the LTF (March 4, 1974)

(Note: Two versions of this letter, from French supporters of the Leninist Trotskyist Faction, are reproduced here. The first, in Spanish, is apparently from an internal bulletin or mailing of the Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores [Argentina]. The second, apparently the French-language original, is from a photocopy distributed among leaders of the LTF. It did not appear in any official LTF mailing. The references to "camaradas Valónes" ("camarades wallons") and "la sección Valóna" ("la section wallonne") apparently allude to the fact that there was officially no French Section of the Fourth International from mid-1973, when the Ligue Communiste was banned by the French government, to late 1974, when the Ligue Communiste Revolutionaire was founded. Internal bulletins of this period refer to the "Walloon Section" instead.)
