The lootings and mass murders of the Native Americans in this country has gone on for over 450 years. Tribe after tribe were massacred or driven off their ancestral homelands and were forced onto reservations.
This process which began with the landing of the first Europeans is being continued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the government as a whole.
As Communists, we take the position that the Indian peoples’ rights can be guaranteed only by:
1. living up to and recognizing the rights of the Indian peoples under existing treaties.
2. Regional Autonomy for the Indian Peoples over large amounts of lands that will guarantee their cultural and economic development and well-being.
The conference also agreed that the rights to equality and freedom of the Indian Peoples must be upheld by all Anglo-American revolutionaries.
A criticism was raised at the Conference that Marxist-Leninist organizations tend to put the Indian question aside for more “pressing matters” and therefore fail to develop the unity of the working class that is necessary to overthrow U.S. imperialism.
This was noted and accepted and a determined effort will be made to ensure that the Congress will do its utmost to fight for the rights of the Indian Peoples.
