Hyndman, Henry Mayers (1842-1922)

hyndman-henry English Social-Democrat. Up to 1880, when he got to know Marx, Hyndman was a democrat of an indefinite type who had connections and sympathies with the Tories. "He achieved his turn to socialism after reading Capital (in the French translation) during one of the numerous voyages he made to America between 1874 and 1880." (Lenin.) Founded the Social-Democratic Federation in 1881, which helped influence Australian Socialists, though never became a mass organisation. In 1914 he was an ardent patriot; after the October Revolution in Russia he was a supporter of intervention.
