Seven chapters of this history were serialised in Justice, the weekly organ of the SDF in 1884. At the end of 1884 Bax broke with Hyndman and together with William Morris and Eleanor Marx etc, helped to form the Socialist League. When he returned to the SDF in 1888 3 articles were added to the beginning of the series and the previous seven already published were then repeated. The paper then continued the series for another 17 chapters to conclusion. In 1890 these articles appeared in this book, slightly revised and augmented | ||

Bax bought the monthly magazine Time, which he did not want to turn into a Socialist journal, but rather into a broader and progressive cultural paper. He apparently sold it or closed it down in December 1891 (evidence from Kapp’s biography of Eleanor Marx.)
