IMPERIALISM HAS been the word on the lips of millions in the last two war-filled years. But there is disagreement as to what it really means: is waging war only of benefit to the arms manufacturers and the multinationals gaining lucrative contracts to rebuild war-ravaged countries? Or does it run deeper than that, to the heart of the logic of capitalism? Chris Harman, author of A People’s History of the World, takes us through the bloody 20th century. He shows how a clear understanding of the relationship between military and economic competition is crucial for building an effective anti-imperialist movement today.

THE IRAQI PEOPLE are portrayed on our TV screens as victims – first of Saddam Hussein, then of US and UK bombs. Anne Alexander reveals the mass movements that shook Iraq in the 1940s and 1950s, when millions of workers and peasants rose up against imperialism.

MIKE KIDRON, who died recently, was the founding editor of this journal 43 years ago. Ian Birchall introduces a selection of extracts from his early editorials, spanning, among other things, pacifism and the bomb, confronting Nazis on our streets, and the role of the theoretical journal. Plus Brian Manning draws out the legacy of Marxist historian Christopher Hill.

ITALY, 1922, was a country on a knife-edge. We reprint an article first published in 1932 recounting how the people of Parma turned their streets into barricades, successfully fighting off Mussolini’s ‘punitive raids’ and sending the fascists running with their tails between their legs. Book reviews include the young Marx and the anti-capitalist manifesto Change the World Without Taking Power.
