Human Freedom and Responsibility
Frederick Vivian
Chatto & Windus, 21s.

The belief, which is never explained, that every event has a cause, is, Vivian claims, essential for any understanding of the world. Applying this to human actions he decides that we are all determined by heredity and environment and are also free and responsible agents. He confuses freedom with feeling free and talks, with no apparent discomfort, of ‘doing one’s duty’. Most modern work and most of the problems in this field are ignored.
